Joe Nemcek, Life member of Mohave Sportsman Club, was accredited in July of 2017 as a Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor for Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting. He has been an NRA Certified Instructor in pistol, rifle, and shotgun for more than 20 years.
Scouts interested in working toward either merit badge should start with the requirements as shown at www.scouting.org. (see the links shown at the end of this page) The best source for learning materials is the appropriate shooting pamphlet which is readily available at www.scoutstuff.org . Online users may also find older resources available on the web. While not always the most current learning materials, they are a positive resource without any start-up cost.
Mr. Nemcek may be contacted directly to provide evaluation of scouts working towards their merit badge. The Rifle Shooting badge can be evaluated throughout the year. The Shotgun Shooting badge will need to be arranged in advance, due to clay costs and scheduling at the Clay Target Center.
A Scout does NOT need to own a .22 rifle or shotgun. During range time, they may borrow from the MSC inventory after basic firearms training, or from Mr. Nemcek while being evaluated. The scouts will be responsible for the ammunition used to obtain the badge. As a reminder, the badge-seeking scout will still need the approval card signed by the scout leader, before the badge can be awarded. The MSC Board of Directors has agreed to waive the daily range fee for a scout’s shooting practice rounds and during actual performance qualification. Practice targets can be purchased at the MSC Range House or provided by the scout. Qualification targets are available from a reserved supply in the Range House or from Mr. Nemcek during the evaluation process.
Mr. Nemcek is available to attend Troop meetings for a general presentation or to perform partial evaluation of non-shooting portions of the badge requirements. He is also available to perform firearms training at the MSC Range with prior appointment and parental permission.
